Rollback of Pandemic-Era Protections
A Step Toward Balanced and Sustainable Affordable Housing
The recent decision by the D.C. Council to roll back pandemic-era protections that have significantly impacted landlords is seen as a step in the right direction by the DC Landlord Association. These protections, which cost landlords hundreds of millions during the COVID-19 pandemic, have created an unsustainable environment for property owners. While the rollback of these policies is a start, more needs to be done to ensure a fair and equitable housing system in Washington, D.C.
For long-term affordable housing solutions, there must be balanced laws, codes, and procedures that support both landlords and tenants. Landlords are integral to the city's housing supply, and without reasonable protections and processes in place, the risk of losing affordable rental units only increases. We believe that the creation of a healthy housing market requires policies that allow property owners to maintain and manage their investments while also addressing the needs of tenants.
The DC Landlord Association advocates for a collaborative approach in shaping future housing policy. Our goal is to ensure that landlords can continue to provide safe, affordable housing options in a way that benefits the entire community. We look forward to working with the D.C. Council on developing lasting solutions that prioritize both affordability and sustainability in the housing market.
